Chinese New Year – the ritual of renewal, family, and hope for the year ahead

Every year, hundreds of millions of people set out on a journey to return home.

Train stations, airports, and highways become crowded. Entire families reunite. Meals are prepared with care. Homes are cleaned. Red lanterns appear in streets and windows.

This is Chinese New Year, one of the largest and oldest collective celebrations in the world. Also known as the Spring Festival, it marks the beginning of a new year in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar.

Its date changes from year to year, usually falling between late January and mid-February. The celebration lasts for approximately two weeks and concludes with the Lantern Festival.

Its origins stretch back more than two thousand years into Chinese history. Over time, numerous legends have become woven into the festival. One of the most famous tells the story of Nian, a mythical creature said to fear light, fire, and the color red

Perhaps this is why fireworks, lanterns, and red decorations remain central symbols of the celebration today.

Before the new year begins, homes are thoroughly cleaned. This is not merely a practical task. It is also a symbolic gesture.

Traditionally, it is believed that cleaning away the old makes room for what is about to come.

Families gather for a festive meal. Children receive red envelopes containing money. Gifts are exchanged., relatives are visited, fireworks are lit, dragon and lion dances fill the streets.

From the outside, it may seem like a loud and spectacular celebration. Yet beneath the surface, many of its customs speak about something very simple: continuity.

Anthropologist and sociologist Fei Xiaotong described traditional Chinese society as being built around family relationships and the responsibilities shared between generations.

In this context, Chinese New Year is not simply the beginning of a new calendar year. It is also a moment of reaffirming belonging.

Historian Kwang-Ching Liu observed that many of China's great festivals have served throughout history as ways of transmitting collective memory and cultural values from one generation to the next.

Perhaps that is why millions of people continue to make extraordinary efforts to return home during this period.

Not only for the celebration itself, but to be together, to share the same table, to begin a new cycle in the company of those who are part of their story.

Many cultures have rituals dedicated to new beginnings. Yet few mobilize so many people and transform the journey home into a collective act on such a scale. Perhaps this is one of the reasons Chinese New Year continues to resonate so deeply.

It is not merely about changing a date on a calendar. It is about the way people choose to step together into a new chapter.

Sometimes, a ritual is not about looking forward. Sometimes, a ritual begins by coming home.
