Hajj – the pilgrimage to Mecca and the transformative power of the journey

Hajj is one of the largest walking rituals in the world.

For over 1,400 years, millions of people have taken part in Hajj, one of the greatest pilgrimages on Earth, retracing ritual gestures that symbolize equality, belonging, and spiritual seeking. Every year, millions walk toward the same place, repeating gestures and routes that are centuries old.

Hajj is not only about the destination. It is about the journey, the repetition, and the transformation.

Pilgrims walk together, dressed simply, in a form that symbolizes equality among all people, regardless of status or origin. During Hajj, many pilgrims wear ihram, a simple ritual garment that represents a temporary renunciation of social, economic, or cultural differences.

Some of the rituals include:

  • walking repeatedly between two hills,
  • circling the Kaaba seven times,
  • moments of prayer, pausing, and reflection.

Historians say that the origins of these practices are rooted in very old traditions from the Arabian Peninsula, later integrated into Islamic spirituality. They note that Hajj is one of the oldest pilgrimages continuously practiced to this day, preserving ritual gestures passed down for more than a millennium.

Anthropologists observe something profound: when many people repeat the same gesture with the same intention, a powerful sense of belonging and collective meaning emerges.

Anthropologist Victor Turner described pilgrimages as spaces where people temporarily step out of their usual identities and roles and enter a shared experience of transformation.

Sociologist Émile Durkheim noted that collective rituals have the capacity to create what he called a shared group energy — a sense of belonging that goes beyond individual experience.

Perhaps this is why ritual walking appears in so many cultures. Because sometimes the body understands change before the mind can explain it.

👉 If you were to take a journey with a clear intention, what would you leave behind and what would you hope to find?

👉 Is there a place you return to again and again because it holds special meaning for you?

👉 Have you ever had the experience where a walk, a trip, or a journey brought you more clarity than many explanations?
