The earliest forms appeared during the first centuries of the Christian era and were often performed in rivers or natural springs. Archaeologists have discovered very early baptisteries<\/a> in places such as Dura-Europos (Siria)<\/a>, dating to around the 3rd century CE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Christian tradition, the water of baptism symbolizes the beginning of a new life. In the early days of Christianity, many people were baptized as adults through full immersion in water, and baptism was seen as a sign of inner transformation and entry into a new community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Historians of religion observe, however, that the use of water in rituals is much older than Christianity.
