{"id":4174,"date":"2026-07-24T13:44:34","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T10:44:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iuliavs.ro\/?p=4174"},"modified":"2026-09-11T13:49:25","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T10:49:25","slug":"juraminte-militare-si-academice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iuliavs.ro\/en\/juraminte-militare-si-academice\/","title":{"rendered":"Military and academic oaths \u2013 the rituals that mark the passage into a new role"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Military and academic oaths are among the oldest social rituals that still exist almost unchanged.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the sacramentum of Roman soldiers and the Hippocratic Oath to modern university ceremonies, oaths continue to mark identity, responsibility, and belonging to a community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For thousands of years, humans have felt the need to mark \u2014 through words and ceremony \u2014 the moment when someone steps into a new role:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>soldier,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>doctor,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>judge,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>teacher,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>scholar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Ancient Rome, there was the sacramentum \u2014 the military oath through which soldiers declared loyalty to the empire and accepted the responsibility of their role.\nIn medieval European universities, academic oaths and initiation ceremonies appeared, marking the official entrance of students and professors into a community of knowledge.\nAnd one of the most well\u2011known examples remains the Hippocratic Oath, symbolically used by physicians since Antiquity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These military and academic oaths were not only administrative acts \u2014 they were symbolic thresholds, marking the entrance into a new stage of life.\nPerhaps this is why they continue to be preserved today in institutions around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropologists note that an oath has a much deeper role than a simple promise.\nWhen a person speaks certain words in front of a community, their identity begins to shift symbolically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Victor Turner described such <a href=\"https:\/\/iuliavs.ro\/en\/ritualurile-si-stiinta-vindecarii\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2871\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-woostify-primary-color\">rituals<\/mark><\/a> as moments of passage between \u201cwho you were\u201d and \u201cwho you are becoming.\u201d\nAnd anthropologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Arnold-van-Gennep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arnold van Gennep<\/a> observed that societies use ceremonies and rituals to mark important changes in an individual\u2019s status and identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe this is why these ceremonies still move people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the uniform,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the raised hand,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the spoken words,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the receiving of a diploma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because the objects have power in themselves \u2014 but because humans need to mark the important moments of their transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49 Is there a promise or commitment you feel you made to yourself that changed your life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49 Do you remember a moment when you felt you entered a new stage of your life, even without an official ceremony?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49 If you were to create a personal ritual for the beginning of a new chapter in your life, what would it look like?<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jur\u0103mintele militare \u0219i academice sunt printre cele mai vechi ritualuri sociale care \u00eenc\u0103 exist\u0103 aproape neschimbate.
