This is one of the oldest rituals preserved in the Romanian cultural space: the Fires of S\u00e2nziene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They are lit on the night of June 23 to 24, near the summer solstice and the celebration of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although today they are connected to the Christian calendar, most historians believe that this custom is much older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Similar rituals have been found for centuries in many regions of Europe, where fire was lit around the solstice to mark the moment when light reaches its peak before the days slowly begin to shorten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Romanian tradition, the fires carried several meanings.\n\nThey were lit for the protection of households, for health, for the fertility of the fields, for the well\u2011being of the community.\n\nIn some regions, young people jumped over the fire, and the flames were seen as a symbol of purification and of crossing into a new stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
