From the \"Our Everyday Mind\" series<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Someone suddenly cuts you off in traffic. What a jerk,<\/em>you think, almost instantly. A coworker is late to a meeting for the third time. He's disorganized, he doesn't care.<\/em>But when you're the one running late, or when you're the one who cuts someone off so you won't miss an important meeting, the explanation comes just as fast, from the opposite direction: you had a reason. It was a hard day. It wasn't your fault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same gesture tells two different stories. About you, context speaks. About the other person, character speaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 1967, psychologists Edward Jones and Victor Harris<\/a> ran a simple experiment at Duke University. They gave students essays written by other students, some in favor of Fidel Castro, some against. Half the readers were told the essay's author had been free to write whatever they actually believed. The other half were told, clearly and unambiguously, that the position in the essay had been assigned by a coin toss \u2014 the author hadn't had any choice at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The result in the first group was expected: readers assumed the essay reflected the author's real beliefs. What was surprising was the result in the second group. Even when they knew, with certainty, that the author had had no freedom of choice, readers still attributed to them a personal attitude close to the position in the essay \u2014 as if the obvious situational constraint simply hadn't mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A decade later, psychologist Lee Ross <\/a>gave this pattern a name: the fundamental attribution error<\/em> \u2014 the tendency to explain other people's behavior through character traits, ignoring context, even when that context is visible and obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You don't need a coin toss to recognize the pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Someone answers a question sharply, and we conclude they're naturally short-tempered \u2014 not someone who may have gotten bad news five minutes earlier. A candidate seems stiff in an interview, and we mark them down as inflexible \u2014 not as someone briefly frozen by the very natural nervousness of an important interview. We judge poverty as a sign of laziness, not as the result of circumstances we rarely see in full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It happened to me once, driving tired and in a hurry, that I honked angrily at someone going too slowly. In my mind, I had solid reasons \u2014 I was already running late, I was having a complicated day. I didn't think, for even a second, that the person in front of me might have had reasons of her own, just as solid. Within seconds I'd already invented her character, without knowing anything about her morning. My explanation, for myself, was the context. My explanation, for her, was her character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The explanation has partly to do with plain visual attention. When we watch someone else act, the person is the visible figure, clear, easy to follow. The context around them \u2014 recent history, invisible pressures, constraints we can't see \u2014 remains, literally, background. The mind explains what it sees directly more easily than what has to be inferred or imagined.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The pattern gets stronger exactly when we're in a hurry, tired, or busy with something else \u2014 in other words, when we have the least time and energy available to factor in context. Explaining through character is faster, simpler, cognitively cheaper. Explaining through context takes more effort \u2014 exactly the resource we have the least of during most rushed moments of a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This error has a sister, just as consistent: the same mind that explains other people's behavior through character explains its own behavior, almost always, through context. We are, in turn, the most lenient judge of our own actions and the harshest judge of everyone else's \u2014 without ever noticing the contradiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The name suggests a universal truth about the human mind. Reality is a little more nuanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cross-cultural research has shown that the pattern is far more pronounced in individualist cultures, especially Western ones, than in collectivist ones. People raised in a cultural framework that emphasizes relational networks tend to spontaneously include more situational explanations when interpreting someone else's behavior. Not because they're naturally more attentive or more empathetic. But because their way of understanding a person has always included the fabric surrounding them, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What we call, with such emphasis, a fundamental error<\/em> error turns out, on closer look, to be more of a learned habit \u2014 a very widespread one, but not an inevitable one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That the first explanation that comes to mind about someone's behavior is, most of the time, the simplest one, not necessarily the correct one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That the same mind that instantly excuses you, through context, stands ready to condemn someone else, through character \u2014 for often identical actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That the pattern grows stronger exactly in moments of rush and fatigue, when you have the least desire to stop and ask yourself what you're not seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That taking someone's context into account doesn't mean automatically excusing their behavior \u2014 it just means leaving room for a fuller explanation than the first one that shows up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And, perhaps just as important, context isn't invisible because people hide it.<\/strong> Most of the time it's invisible because we simply have no way of seeing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We almost always see only the behavior.
