Not a speech. Not an explanation. Just a few words, spoken slowly, in a voice that trembles a little: I see you. And something, somewhere, shifted.

I've seen the same thing outside the circle — in a conversation between partners, in a letter never read aloud, in a moment when someone finally said "I feel," instead of "you are." Every time, the same wonder: how can a sentence this small do what hours of arguing never manage?

The answer, I think, comes down to one thing. Not what we say, but where we're speaking from when we say it.

What subjective communication is

There's a way of speaking that doesn't lean on arguments, but on lived experience. A way of communicating where you're not trying to be right, but to be true.

Subjective communication is exactly that: the way you express your own lived experience, not your interpretation of the other person. It's the language that starts in the body, in emotion, in your own history.

When you communicate subjectively, you don't say "you did," you say "I felt." You don't say "you are," you say "what comes up in me." You don't say "you're wrong," you say "this is what's happening in my body."

It's a small shift on paper. It's a large shift in the body.

Before words, the body is already speaking

Often, subjective communication begins a few seconds before the first sentence appears.

First comes the knot in the throat. Or the stomach tightening. Or the chest closing. Or tears rising before you even know why.

Words don't create the inner truth. They just give it a shape that can be shared.

Why it matters so much

Emotional experience can't be argued with. It can only be heard.

This, I think, is the essential difference. An argument invites a counter-argument. A lived experience invites nothing — it just sits there, visible, waiting to be received. That's why subjective communication reduces conflict without avoiding the truth, and brings clarity exactly where defensiveness would otherwise have shown up.

Family therapist Virginia Satir said that the greatest gift a person can receive is to be seen, heard, understood and touched by another — and that when this happens, she feels, at last, that contact has been made. I think that's exactly what any hard conversation in a relationship is really looking for. Not a solution. Contact.

Psychologist Carl Rogers called this congruence — the match between what you're living, what you feel you're living, and what you express about it. For him, this alignment is exactly what makes the difference between a word that lands and one that merely passes by. Words don't have power because they're well chosen. They have power because they're true for the person speaking them.

How it sounds in relationships

In relationships, subjective communication is an art of lived sincerity. It's not about saying everything. It's about saying what's alive in you, right now.

Instead of "you make me angry when you raise your voice," you can say: "when your voice gets louder, I feel a tightness in my chest, and a fear comes up that there's no room left for me."

Instead of "you don't care about me," you can say: "when you didn't show up, something sharp appeared in me, and the thought that I don't matter."

Instead of "you're not listening to me," you can say: "when you look away, I feel myself disappearing, and the urge to withdraw comes up."

The same shift works in places you wouldn't expect — at work, in difficult feedback. Instead of "you didn't do your job properly," you can say: "reading the report, I felt uncertain, and I had trouble finding the arguments I needed." It's not less direct. It's just more true.

Marshall Rosenberg, the founder of Nonviolent Communication, wrote that most of us grew up speaking a language that teaches us to label, compare, and judge, rather than to be aware of what we feel and what we need. Maybe that's why it feels so hard, at first, to say "I feel" instead of "you are." It isn't our native tongue. It's one we have to learn.

There's a further step, beyond "I feel." When you say "I feel," you're no longer asking the other person to decide whether your emotion is justified. You're taking ownership that it exists — and choosing to bring it into the relationship without turning it into an accusation.

Subjective communication isn't weak. It's courageous. Because it asks you to show up without armor. And, paradoxically, it's exactly that vulnerability that creates safety — not fragility.

My truth, not the truth

Subjective communication doesn't turn your experience into a universal truth. It only acknowledges that this is your experience, here and now.

The other person may have a completely different experience, without either one being false. That's exactly why this kind of communication doesn't try to prove anything. It only tries to share.

If in ordinary relationships subjective communication creates space for two people to meet, in constellations it goes even further. Here, words no longer express only individual experience — they become the language through which an entire system can make its story heard.

The voice of the field: subjective communication in constellations

In a constellation, a woman looks, for the first time, at her mother's representative. She explains nothing. She argues nothing. She says only this: "I've missed you." A stillness settles into the room, one that no one forces. Her breathing shifts, almost imperceptibly. Something loosens in her body. No one could say exactly what happened. And yet, almost everyone in the circle feels that something has resettled.

This is subjective communication in its purest form. Representatives don't describe "what I think," but "what I feel." They don't analyze. They observe. They don't interpret. They let the body speak.

Bert Hellinger, who laid the foundations of family constellations, spoke of a discipline he called the phenomenological gaze — setting interpretation aside in favor of simply observing what is. In Orders of Love,he insists that every family system has its own order, and that words spoken correctly, within that order, can resettle something that had seemed blocked for generations.

The emotions that arise in the circle are treated as echoes of the system, not as personal reactions. An impulse, an attraction, a resistance — all become information. Short phrases become instruments of inner realignment. And the words spoken touch old roots, sometimes ones that reach back across generations.

It's the language through which the field expresses itself through you — not the language through which you explain the field.

On the power of spoken words

The words in a constellation aren't simple sentences. They're doorways.

When someone says: I see you. I give you back your place. I give you back your destiny. I am small, you are big. Thank you for my life. — they're not repeating a formula. They're realigning an inner structure.

Anne Ancelin Schützenberger, the French psychologist who coined the term psychogenealogy, showed how untold stories, silences and family secrets keep speaking through symptoms, choices and repetitions — sometimes across several generations. Maybe that's why these short phrases carry so much weight: they don't address only the person in front of you, but the entire chain you belong to.

The key isn't in the text. The key is in you. In the body that trembles when it recognizes a wound. In the heart that softens when you allow yourself to feel. In the breath that deepens when something resettles.

These phrases work because they touch places ordinary words can't reach. Because they're spoken from a field larger than your personal story. Because they're truths that don't ask for explanation, only recognition.

Subjective communication versus passive-aggressive communication

Subjective communication is honest. Passive-aggressive communication is disguised.

One says: "I feel this," "I'm living this," "I need this." The other says: "it doesn't matter, do what you want," "I'm not upset, just disappointed," "it's nothing, it's just... never mind."

The difference isn't in content. It's in direction. Subjective communication is about you — and that's exactly why it creates closeness. Passive-aggressive communication is, despite appearances, still about the other person — about what they should guess, feel, fix. And that's exactly why it creates distance.

One opens. The other closes.

What subjective communication isn't

It doesn't mean saying absolutely everything you feel, at every moment, to everyone. It doesn't mean making the other person responsible for your emotions, as if they should fix them. It doesn't mean your perception is the only reality in the room. And it doesn't mean avoiding boundaries or difficult conversations, hidden behind an endlessly repeated "I feel."

It only means speaking from the place where your experience is alive — without turning it into a verdict about the other person.

Maybe there are no magic words. There are only words that, spoken from your inner truth, find their right place in the other person.

And maybe that's why, sometimes, the most powerful sentences are also the shortest.

I see you. I missed you. I'm sorry. Thank you. I am here.

If you feel there's room for more, I invite you to discover the systemic way I work — through circles, conversations, and spaces of reflection dedicated to the inner process. Explore the approach through circles or the take a first step to see what opens up for you.

Despre comunicarea subiectivă și puterea vorbelor rostite din adevărul interior Am stat de multe ori în cercul unei constelații și am văzut o propoziție scurtă schimbând tot aerul din încăpere.
