Emoto’s methodology was criticized mainly for lacking control procedures such as double‑blind testing, which means the results could have been unintentionally influenced by the researchers’ expectations. Yet the controversy itself sparked an essential question: Can water retain information? Can it be sensitive to intention, emotion, and field?

Although Emoto’s experiments have not been validated by the scientific community, they brought attention to a question that continues to fascinate researchers from many disciplines:

How complex is water, really?

Contemporary research suggests that water is a far more dynamic and organized system than was once believed, even though many hypotheses regarding water memory remain open to debate.

In a way, Emoto was the poet who opened the door.

Science entered later.

Contemporary research – Pollack and Montagnier

Today, scientists explore the properties of water with far more precise instruments.

Gerald Pollack – the fourth phase of water

Gerald Pollack, professor at the University of Washington, discovered Exclusion Zone Water (EZ Water), a special phase of water distinct from solid, liquid, and gas.

This “structured water” possesses electrical properties, an organized architecture, and the ability to store information.

Pollack states:

“Water is not merely a passive solvent. It is an active participant in the processes of life.”

EZ Water appears at the interface between water and biological surfaces—precisely where the body communicates, regulates, and transmits information.

In this zone, water organizes itself into a hexagonal network capable of retaining “traces” of previous interactions.

Luc Montagnier – the electromagnetic signature of DNA

Luc Montagnier, Nobel Prize laureate for the discovery of HIV, demonstrated that DNA molecules emit electromagnetic signals in water.

Furthermore, water may “record” these signals, and the information can later be reconstructed.

In a well-known interview, Montagnier stated:

“Water has the capacity to memorize biological structures through electromagnetic signals.”

These findings do not directly confirm Emoto’s theories, but they open a common territory.

Some research suggests that water may participate in complex processes of biological information organization and transmission, although the mechanisms and implications of these phenomena continue to be investigated.

While the language of science and the language of spiritual traditions are different, some questions seem to meet at the same point:

What role does water play in the organization and support of life?

Beyond the laboratory, however, human beings have intuitively sensed for thousands of years that water occupies a special place in human experience.

Anthropologists, philosophers, and historians of religion have observed that nearly every culture associates water with transformation, memory, and transitions between states of existence.

Water as a symbol of transformation

Anthropologist Victor Turner observed that many of humanity’s most important rituals unfold in “liminal” spaces—thresholds between what we were and what we are becoming.

Water frequently appears in these moments: purification rites, initiations, baptisms, and pilgrimages.

For anthropologist Mary Douglas, water is one of the universal symbols of purification.

In Purity and Danger, she shows how many cultures use water not only to cleanse the body but also to restore symbolic and inner order.

French philosopher Gaston Bachelard goes even further.

In Water and Dreams he writes:

“Water is the substance of profound dreaming.”

For Bachelard, water is not merely an element of nature.

It is one of the great symbols of the human soul—a mirror in which memory, imagination, and emotional life are reflected.

Perhaps that is why water continues to appear, across centuries and beliefs, as a space of transformation.

It does not separate the outer world from the inner one.

It creates a bridge between them.

Juan Carlos Arias – water as a phenomenological space

In Mexico, systemic therapist Juan Carlos Arias Juan Carlos Arias took this understanding in a radically different direction—not into the laboratory, but into the phenomenological field of constellations.

He is considered the founder of River Constellations , a form of work in which systemic dynamics are represented in water through floating objects that move spontaneously.

Arias observed that water:

amplifies the phenomenological field

quickly reveals tensions, attractions, and exclusions

functions as a neutral yet sensitive medium

allows the unconscious to manifest without resistance

The movement of objects in water becomes a form of language.

What appears through representatives in classical constellations appears here through flow, turbulence, distance, closeness, and stillness.

Arias often says in his trainings:

“Water shows what the mind hides.”

His method has been adopted and further developed in Italy, Mexico, the United States, Romania, and other countries, each practitioner bringing their own experience into the work.

Over the past years, I have had the opportunity to study and experience different approaches to Water Constellations in various training contexts and schools.

What continues to surprise me is not so much the movement of the objects, but the reactions of the people witnessing the process.

Sometimes unexpected emotions arise.

At other times, understandings emerge that were not accessible through analysis or explanation.

I cannot say that water provides answers.

But I have observed that it often creates a space in which certain truths become easier to see.

Water constellations – flow, emotion, field, and release

Water Constellations are among the most sensitive and rapid ways of accessing deep emotional layers.

Water does not lie.

Water does not negotiate.

Water cannot be mentally controlled.

For this reason, working with water:

bypasses defense mechanisms

reveals hidden loyalties

shows where tension, fear, guilt, or exclusion exist

allows the emotional body to express itself without words

facilitates somatic release through movement, vibration, and flow

Sometimes what appears in the water surprises even the person observing it.

In one constellation, two objects representing a daughter and her mother remained distant for a long time, unable to move closer.

Between them was a third object representing an old loss within the family system.

Only after that presence was acknowledged and symbolically included in the field did the movement of the water begin to change, allowing the two representations to gradually draw nearer.

Those encountering such processes for the first time often look for explanations.

Those who work phenomenologically first observe what reveals itself and only later attempt to assign meaning to it.

Water becomes an intermediary body between the client and their system.

A space where dynamics reveal themselves with an almost brutal clarity, yet in a gentle, fluid, and natural way.

In Water Constellations, the phenomenological field often manifests with a speed and precision that surprises even experienced facilitators.

It is as if the water knows.

As if it recognizes patterns.

As if it carries the memory of the system and offers a pathway back toward order.

Water becomes a phenomenological oracle, a space where:

emotions settle

traumas begin to loosen

loyalties become clearer

the body grows calmer

the system finds its place

At its essence, Water Constellations are a form of fluid healing.

A return to a primordial language:

the language of flow, vibration, and truth that cannot be hidden.

Frequently asked questions

Is there scientific evidence that water stores memories or emotions?

At present, there is no scientific consensus confirming the existence of “water memory” in the popular sense of the term.

There are, however, ongoing studies exploring the complex properties of water and its role in biological, electromagnetic, and molecular organizational processes.

What are water constellations?

Water constellations are a phenomenological approach inspired by Systemic Constellations, in which relationships and dynamics are represented through objects placed in a container of water.

How do water constellations differ from classical constellations?

Classical constellations usually work with human representatives or objects placed on solid ground.

In Water Constellations, the movement and interaction of the representations are influenced by the fluid medium itself, which can reveal certain dynamics in a different way.

Is water “intelligent”?

From a scientific perspective, water is an extraordinarily complex physical system.

From a symbolic and spiritual perspective, many traditions attribute qualities related to memory, transformation, and connection.

How these aspects are interpreted depends on the framework through which we view the phenomenon.

Do I need to believe in anything to participate in a water constellation?

No.

Water Constellations do not require adherence to any particular belief system.

They can be explored as a phenomenological, symbolic, and reflective experience, with each participant free to derive their own meaning from the process.

Water as a silent teacher

Water is the oldest witness in the world.

It has seen everything, carried everything, recorded everything.

In our bodies, in rivers, in oceans, in our tears, in our blood, in our emotional field, water continues to tell stories.

When we work with water, we are not merely working with an element.

We are working with a living archive.

A fluid memory.

A subtle intelligence that exceeds us.

Water constellations are not merely a method.

They are a return to an ancient knowing, to a wisdom that has flowed through humanity for thousands of years.

They are an invitation to listen to the body, to honor the system, and to allow ourselves to be carried by a truth that is not spoken, but revealed.

Water is the silent teacher that shows us the way home.

<a
