They may have roots in the stories, pains, and events lived by the generations before us.
In psychology and psychogenealogy, we talk about two main ways emotional wounds can be passed down: intergenerational trauma and transgenerational trauma.
They may look similar, but they work differently — and understanding the difference helps us see what truly belongs to us and what we may have inherited without knowing.

Intergenerational trauma – When the wound is passed directly from parent to child

Intergenerational trauma is transmitted directly through the relationship between parents and children.
The person who lived the traumatic event is present in the child’s life, and the way the trauma shaped their behavior becomes the environment the child grows up in.

In this case, trauma is not passed through a mysterious or symbolic mechanism — it is passed through the direct relationship between generations.

A parent who has lived through:

violence

major losses

extreme poverty

war

emotional abandonment

may develop certain survival mechanisms.

These mechanisms can include:

hypervigilance

constant anxiety

difficulty expressing emotions

excessive control

the need to avoid conflict

The child does not live the original trauma, but grows up in an environment shaped by it.

This is how attachment patterns and relational models form — patterns that can continue into adulthood.

Transgenerational trauma – When the wound travels across multiple generations

Transgenerational trauma does not stop at two generations.
It can travel through three, four, or even more generations — sometimes even when the original event has been forgotten or hidden.

For example:

an ancestor who died violently

a major loss that was never spoken about

someone excluded from the family

a child who was lost or abandoned

a deep injustice

When these events remain unprocessed or denied, they can continue to influence the family system.

In psychogenealogy, these dynamics are observed through phenomena such as:

unconscious transgenerational loyalties

anniversary syndrome

the repetition of destinies.

Descendants may experience emotions or difficulties without knowing where they come from:

the feeling of carrying a burden that doesn’t feel personal

unexplained fears

repeated relationship difficulties

recurring losses or failures

illnesses appearing at the same ages

In family constellations, it is said that the system seeks balance.
What has been excluded, hidden, or denied tends to reappear in later generations — not as punishment, but as an attempt to bring truth back into the field.
Trauma is not seen only as an individual experience.
It can become a memory of the system.

A family system functions like a relational field in which every member has a place and a sense of belonging.
When a traumatic event is excluded from the family story — a death, a shame, an injustice — the system unconsciously tries to restore balance.
Sometimes this shows up as identifications across generations

A descendant may:

repeat the destiny of an ancestor

carry the emotions of someone who was forgotten

recreate an event at the same age

These dynamics are attempts of the system to bring back what was excluded.

The difference between intergenerational and transgenerational trauma

In short, the difference lies in the distance and the mechanism through which trauma is transmitted..

Intergenerational trauma

passes directly between consecutive generations

appears through the parent–child relationship

is influenced by attachment style

can be observed in behaviors and relational patterns

Transgenerational trauma

travels across multiple generations

may exist even if the original event is unknown

appears through family system dynamics

shows up as repeated patterns in the family

Both can coexist in the same family.

Examples of intergenerational trauma

A mother who grew up in an environment where emotions were not accepted may become distant or critical with her own child.

The child learns that expressing emotions is dangerous or inappropriate.
As an adult, they may struggle to form intimate relationships or express vulnerability.

The original trauma was not lived directly by the child, but its effects are present in the relationship between generations.

Examples of transgenerational trauma

In one family, a grandfather died tragically during the war, and no one ever spoke about him again.

In later generations, there may be:

recurring depression

a sense of meaninglessness

difficulty finding one’s place in life

In a family constellation, an unconscious identification with that forgotten ancestor may appear.
When the story is acknowledged and the person is symbolically reintegrated into the system, the dynamic can begin to shift.

Transgenerational loyalties

One mechanism through which trauma travels across generations is unconscious loyalty to the family. Sometimes, in order to stay connected to our family system, we may repeat or continue certain destinies.

For example:

avoiding success so we don’t surpass our parents

choosing difficult relationships similar to those in the family

sacrificing ourselves excessively for others

Aceste loialități sunt rareori conștiente. Ele funcționează mai degrabă ca un mod prin care sistemul menține echilibrul.

Anniversary syndrome

Another phenomenon observed in psychogenealogy is anniversary syndrome. This appears when important events in a person’s life coincide with dates or ages that were significant in the family’s history.

an accident at the same age an ancestor died

a major loss around the anniversary of a traumatic family event

These correlations are not always causal, but they can indicate the presence of transgenerational dynamics.

Repetition of destinies

In some families, certain patterns repeat across generations:

repeated divorces

recurring bankruptcies

losses at specific ages

relationships marked by abandonment

These repetitions are not caused by a single factor.
They often reflect a combination of psychological, relational, and systemic influences..

What epigenetics says

In recent years, research in epigenetics has begun to show that traumatic experiences can influence how certain genes are expressed.
Studies on the descendants of Holocaust survivors or people affected by major disasters suggest that stress responses may be biologically influenced by the experiences of previous generations.
This does not mean that trauma is genetically transmitted in a fixed or deterministic way.
But it does suggest that the body can carry a biological memory of stress..

How to work with intergenerational trauma

For trauma connected to the direct relationship with parents, many therapeutic approaches can be helpful.

These include:

relational therapy

attachment‑based therapy

inner child work

Inner child work

The concept of the inner child refers to the part of us that holds early emotional experiences.

Through awareness exercises, inner dialogue, and emotional integration, a person can:

recognize childhood needs

release repressed emotions

build a healthier relationship with themselves

This process helps transform patterns formed in the relationship with parents.

How to work with transgenerational trauma

For dynamics that seem to come from the wider history of the family, systemic approaches can bring clarity.
One of these methods is family constellation work..

In constellations, family members are represented symbolically, and the system’s dynamics become visible.
Often, a very simple but profound moment appears: someone who was forgotten or excluded is seen for the first time.

Recognizing this place can bring a reorganization of relationships within the system.

Healing does not mean breaking away from the family

An important aspect of systemic work is that change does not come from rejecting the family.
On the contrary. In many constellation processes, transformation appears when a person can say, symbolically:

“I see what happened. I acknowledge your story.
And I choose to live my own life.”

In this way, belonging is preserved, but the destiny no longer needs to be repeated.

A reflection question

Are there patterns in your family that repeat across several generations?
Or emotions that feel older than your own story?
Sometimes exploring these questions opens a new perspective on your life and on the place you hold in your family’s history.

Frequently asked questions

What is transgenerational trauma?

Transgenerational trauma is the transmission of emotional effects of a trauma across several generations of a family, even when the original event is no longer known.

What is intergenerational trauma?

Intergenerational trauma appears when the traumatic experiences of parents directly influence how they raise their children.

What is the difference between intergenerational and transgenerational trauma?

Intergenerational trauma is passed directly between consecutive generations, while transgenerational trauma can travel across multiple generations.

Can transgenerational trauma be healed?

Exploring family history, systemic constellations, and other forms of therapy can help bring awareness and transformation to these dynamics.

How can I tell if I’m experiencing a transgenerational dynamic?

Signs may include repeated family patterns, unexplained emotions, or events that occur at similar ages or dates across generations.

For some people, these dynamics become clearer in a guided space, such as systemic constellation work.

What family constellations are and how they work: a beginner’s guide

Where meaning begins: discover the personal values that guide your life

If you feel there's room for more, I invite you to discover the systemic way I work — through circles, conversations, and spaces of reflection dedicated to the inner process. Explore the approach through circles or the take a first step to see what opens up for you.

Cum se transmit rănile emoționale prin generații Uneori trăim emoții sau reacții care nu par să își aibă originea în viața noastră.O teamă fără motiv clar.
